The New School Year Encouragement

As we roll into September, it is hard not to think about the upcoming school year. From the freshmen to the returning upperclassmen, the beginning of the year brings a whirlwind of emotions. Homesickness for our freshmen and anxiety about job searching for our seniors hit us all but none the less there is one thing that can aid with all of our anxiety and fear about what the future will hold. Horses. The horses has always been there for us as equestrians. A sort of rock, so to speak, especially now.

So with that being said, I would love to say some words of encouragement, starting with the words of Buck Brannaman, "It is about the quality of communication not the quantity." This not only applies to the way that we ride and act around horses but to the way that we are around people as well. Some of my best friends are not the ones that I spend the most time around, though that comes with time, but they are the ones that I can spend a day or two with out talking to. They are the ones that I feel comfortable around. They are the ones that I can spend all night and all day talking to and being around without getting tired then when life gets in the way, we may not speak for a couple days.

It is important as we start this new school year, that we think about the good friends that we have. They will be there when things truly get hard. They will end up anchoring us to who we really are and us them. These friends that we may have back in our hometowns or the ones that we make here, are the ones that will make this transition period that much easier. Who knows, some of these friends might even last for a lifetime. Tyler Perry says it best as his character, Madea, (I am paraphrasing here) "Some people are in your life as leaves, some as branches, some as the roots. You just gotta know who is who." You can watch the full clip here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZ3a2gvLcvQ). Once you realize who is who in your life, the better transitions in your life can be.

So as we get closer to the beginning of the school year, choose wisely who you want to spend your time with. Select wisely how you spend your time. After all, every decision and choice that you make, no matter how small or large it is, has a reaction. Some times better, some times not so much. Selecting the people around you wisely will help you avoid situations that you might not want to be in and may help you in the future.

Stay healthy. Stay smart. Stay cool.
