About Our Show Team
The IDA region consists of Cal Poly, Stanford, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, and Oregon State University. This season, our shows were held at Cal Poly, UC Santa Cruz, and Stanford. The National Championships take place on the East coast between universities across the nation during the month of April each year. At regional competitions, the host school provides horses for every competitor, and riders draw their mounts out of a hat at the beginning of the day. Each rider gets 10 minutes to ride and acquaint themselves with the host school's horse before completing their test for the judge. This evens the playing field so that the show can be a better test of the rider's ability, rather than who can afford the best horse. It also gives them the opportunity and confidence to ride all types of horses.
We usually have show team tryouts the second weekend of every fall quarter at our equine unit. Our show team also has access to clinicians in the San Luis Obispo area in order to keep improving our skills. We also have ground work clinics to learn about horse behavior, biomechanics and more!
Our 2023-24 team kicked off the year strong at Stanford earlier this school year. They qualified as a team and as individuals for Nationals in April 2024. At Nationals, one of our riders, Caroline, earned first place as an individual! On team day, Cal Poly placed in the top 10. We are proud of all of our riders on the show team!
